Sleddog tours
last update 2011-08-18
| The dogs stand harnessed to the sled; they are eager, happy and waiting impatiently to start the journey. Loaded and anchored, the sled is ready. Watchful eyes follow as you walk back towards the sled; they know the time for off is approaching. The lead dogs wait for your orders. You position yourself steadily with one foot on the brake the other on the runner, one hand takes a firm grip of the steering bar and simultaneously you lift the snow anchor. As if by an instinctive signal the dogs suddenly fall silent and set off at full speed. All is quiet except for the sound of the dogs panting and the crisp cut of the runners through the snow. The dogs are in their element, happiest when working. Now the whole team pulls together, each individual doing its absolute best, the lead dog listens for your orders. You call the leader’s name and cry “left”, immediately the leader veers and takes the new direction, all the other dogs follow, as the flexible wooden sled glides through the curving movement and the journey continues. The dogs look forward to running until nightfall. |
